About Matthew

A charismatic performer perfect for weddings and background music. Highly experienced in many areas including accompanying and directing.
Pianist
Plymouth

From the age of 7, I developed a passion for performing. I've been fortunate to have the opportunity to play across the world. From playing in local care homes to winning the South West Battle of the Big Bands; from providing music to local charities, to performing in world-renowned venues such as Berlin Cathedral; from multiple sell-out choir concerts to releasing a jazz album with my university friends. Having achieved Grade 8 standard in piano, viola and clarinet, I have developed a proficiency in many styles of playing, including background jazz clarinet and piano at hotels, classical viola for weddings, and organ for church services. Additionally, playing with groups is a particular skill of mine. Playing in the pit band for the University Musical Theatre production on several occasions developed my ability in playing with groups large and small. I have grown up playing in orchestras, so am no stranger to formal concerts. One of the founding members of a jazz quintet in Plymouth, Focazzia, I have recorded a live album in a small café and professional music studio. I have done lots of charity work with my music. Local charity fundraising has involved working with Animate Theatre in Plymouth, accompanying them for their annual showcase; I have regularly entertained guests at care homes across the South West playing and singing old-favourite jazz songs. International fundraising has involved tours through Germany, the Netherlands and Belgium raising money for UNICEF; as Musical Director of the University of Plymouth Student Choir, I supported Disability Africa and Sepsis Research UK. As Musical Director of the University of Plymouth Big Band, I aided in raising money for Movember in several charity gigs. Taking on extra skills has been equally as important to broaden my musical knowledge. I have experience in song writing, recently with a disabled queer artist. In my gap year, I taught students ranging from age 7 to 70. I have also tutored and accompanied students in their ABRSM exams.

Matthew joined Mellor Church Choir for our week-long residential tour singing the services at Truro Cathedral in July 2024. This involved learning and performing the repertoire required for 6 services in the cathedral, much of which would have been unknown to Matthew before the tour. Matthew was an asset to the choir both musically and socially. It was clear that he had taken time to prepare for the week. Matthew has an excellent bass/baritone voice with a mellow tone that both blended well with the choir’s ensemble and came across very well in solo work in the large acoustic in the cathedral. Matthew fit in well with the group and was always helpful and flexible in taking on anything that was required including keyboard work. He is a very capable and adaptable musician and a pleasure to work with.

Matthew is an extremely talented and versatile musician. During our care home gigs he was organised and wonderful to work with. He accompanied my vocals with attentive and skilled playing, being open to improvisation. From Jazz to Rock and Roll to Opera, Matthew is capable of all and continues to surprise me with his musicianship. He is an intelligent and passionate musician, who loves what he does. His joy of music shines through his performances.
